Just got the call from the vet (Dr L rather than Dr A today) with the results from Lena's bloodwork. It turns out that her kidney values have gotten much much worse -- she's had marginal kidney issues for a long time (hence the daily subQ fluids) but the numbers have quadrupled since the last check in April.

Since she is doing better today, Dr L's recommendation is to start doing the subQ twice a day. The alternative would be to hospitalize her for intravenous fluids, but that would be stressful, and they wouldn't actually be able to give her more fluids than I can at home -- the quantity being limited by the fact that she also has heart issues.

As usual with Lena, it is hard to tease apart all the different factors. It still seems likely that she's been having strokes, but her overall weakness may be due to lack of kidney function.

The change in kidney values is not something Dr A had predicted. In fact, we only ended up doing the full range of tests because it was cheaper to order the full combination than to order just the two specific items (thyroid and potassium) that she was concerned with. I'd also like to point out that it was my suggestion to do bloodwork at all -- I remembered that we had planned to recheck in September, and asked whether we might want to move that up. So I feel a little proud that my idea proved so pertinent.

It is also cheering (perhaps disproportionately so) just to have something that I am supposed to *do*.

Lena is now doing what she usually does at this time of day: sleeping on the bed, under the duvet. I am starting to think it may be OK to leave the house for a little while...

It sounds like you and Lena had a grueling and heartbreaking weekend. I'm glad things are looking a little brighter -- hang in there! I'm thinking healthy kitty thoughts for you.
