how much does size matter?
Feb. 27th, 2006 10:03 pmWent this evening for the second look at the 3rd St loft. It is every bit as charming as I remember: lovely wood and stone trim, big windows, altogether very sweet.
However, I took along my measuring tape, and confirmed my visual impression that it is a lot less usable space than my current place. Mind you, my current space is huge. But this place was advertised as 1200-some square feet, which is the same size as the apt. In point of fact, there's a "great room" that's about 20 ft square (400 sq ft) plus a loft bedroom that by the most generous estimate is about 200 sq ft (that's counting both the bed platform and the raised storage area), and then there's a hallway and a bathroom and another very-low-ceilinged (i.e. I can't stand up in it) storage space. No way, no how does this add up to 1200.
I wonder if they're on crack or lying or both?
Nevertheless, the fact remains that it's a very nice space, and probably a good price (must ask realtor how much difference it makes in the comps if they are way off on the square footage). And I don't *need* as much space as I have now. I just need to figure out if I can deal with that much less...
Obviously too tired to figure it out right now. We shall see if sleeping on it brings clarity.
