real estate possiblilities, chapter n
May. 29th, 2006 06:13 pmThe two places I went to see today were actually both interesting, which I wasn't entirely expecting.
The first is on the southeast side of Lake Merritt, right on Lakeshore, with a large balcony overlooking a little park and across to the Lake -- wow, what a view! The unit itself, however, is listed as needing "TLC" and it certainly does - mostly cosmetic or relatively small stuff but lots of it (paint, flooring, appliances, light fixtures, balcony door sticks, etc) . And although the spaces facing the balcony are very light and pleasant, the interior parts are very dark. So hmm.
Probably most important: it's a bit pricey, possibly out of my range when you factor in the work needed before move-in. I would need to do some very careful math. No doubt it would be a good investment, just need to figure out if I could swing it.
The other one is in Adams Point, but up over the crest of the hill right by the freeway. It's actually been on the market for a while, but I was being choosy about location. It's a smidge over a mile to BART, and there's freeway noise, and it has the requisite beige carpet, but otherwise it's actually quite nice. The kitchen is rather miniscule, but for me, that's OK, I'd rather have the space elsewhere. It has two balconies, one off of the living room that overlooks a courtyard, the other off of a bedroom with a fairly nice view of the East Bay hills.
The previous owner was obviously obsessed with lighting and wiring because there is more track lighting and recessed ceiling lights than any 3 apartments I've ever seen, and vast quantities of electrical outlets including one block of 5 or 6 4-plug outlets about 4 feet up on the living room wall, presumably the former site of an entertainment center deluxe!
Both seem to have plenty of storage, and seem like they could be enough space. So, hmm and double hmm. I'm not quite in love with either (although the Lake Merritt view is pretty darn sexy) but they do both seem like real possibilities.
And my realtor reiterated that he is sure things will come on the market this week. So it makes sense to take a deep breath and see what the next few days bring...
