winding down
Jul. 14th, 2007 04:52 pmMy vacation is almost over, as in: I blinked and two weeks are gone. OTOH, I am actually looking forward to being home with the kitties.
It's late afternoon Saturday, and I'm killing time in an internet cafe, before going out to look for a meal (perhaps with a beer, since strangely I have not managed to drink any beer while I've been here, although I have had a lot of wine). After the meal I need to make my way to the hotel at Heathrow, where I am staying in order to have a leisurely morning and catch the plane home with as little stress as possible.
Miscellaneous highlights of the trip:
- Managed to catch both Shelagh (for a short visit over tea) and Cheryl (for a meal at the Patrick's) while in Suffolk, despite zero pre-planning.
- Cathedrals and suchlike in Amien and Boulogne-sur-mer.
- Various lovely meals, either in charming French restaurants or in my friends' homes. And a very good Indian meal in London (why is it you can't get Chicken Dansak in the US?)
- As mentioned previously, lots of wine and an assortment of aperitifs. The dandelion wine aperitif was especially nice, too bad I didn't feel like carrying a bottle home :/
- Binged on reading Terry Pratchett as it turned out that Neil's extensive collection is now housed in France.
- A nice visit with my friend Barbara, at Kew of course (turns out she no longer volunteers to run guided tours, but she still knows the place quite well).
- London shows: Avenue Q, Stomp, Spamalot (yes, I was leaning toward light entertainment).
- London museums: National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain, V&A.
- Lots of walking, most of it intentional.
Well, my pound sterling worth of internet time is almost up, so I shall wander on in search of a pub.
