Cleared the last of my stuff from the old apartment today -- all that's left to do there is meet the landlord for a final walkthrough, and hope he's feeling mellow. Which he should be, he's got new tenants and was able to increase the rent.

But nevertheless I am a bit worried about my security deposit. Specifically, there are some stains on the carpet where I had area rugs and the color leached. On the one hand, I feel kind of stupid for not having a pad in between, but on the other hand, these were not new carpets and they sat on the beige carpet at my old place in Berkeley for 2-1/2 years with no ill effect. So I can only surmise that SF really is that much damper...

I did actually pay to have the carpets cleaned (in additional to general cleaning), and probably should have argued with the cleaner about the amount I paid considering the stains are still there... On the other hand, once the furniture was gone, it was clear that the carpet needed to be cleaned just to take care of the cat hair. Amazing how it just kind of blended in until you saw a patch that had been protected...

I babble. The point is, the carpets looked like crap when I moved in, but they are noticably worse now, and it is my fault. The main argument in my favor is that the value of the carpets was minimal because they were basically worn out anyway.

Anyway, I should stop worrying about that until Wednesday, when I go back for the final walkthrough. He will either be a dickhead about it, or he won't, nothing more I can do.

Now trying to get back in the mode of thinking about anything other than moving, unpacking, organizing the place... Like for instance, going to work!

But it's hard, there is so much to do here.

I keep running into things were I really can't unpack until I buy a piece of furniture. I actually went to IKEA yesterday and tried to buy $600 worth of furniture (2 wardrobes and a shelf unit for the kitchen) only to be told it was all out of stock. Very frustrating! And you can't even pay for something on back order and come back later when it's in, they don't do that -- you have to just keep calling, come back to the store, and hope it's not so popular that you miss it again.

So my clothes are still in cardboard wardrobes (wrinkling even as we speak) and I am still eating off of paper plates because I have nowhere to unpack my dishes into.

I did manage to buy a desk / writing table today -- something I've needed for a long time, the table I was using in SF was really not big enough -- I bought it to use "temporarily" until I could get something the right size. So anyway, today I bought something at Walmart -- adventures in new Big Box land, AKA San Leandro -- which is still in it's box so I just hope it actually works and doesn't look too hideous.

Oh, and yesterday (before the frustrating run to IKEA) bought a couple of shoji screens. Because I really needed something to make me feel like the people in the big apartment building over yonder weren't watching me undress (and probably being unimpressed).

Other than that... no bookcases have been attached to walls, therefore no books unpacked. No pictures hung. Trying hard not to unpack any tchotchkes until a little more order has emerged out of chaos. On the other hand, the basic areas seem to be working the way I hoped... Give it a couple of weeks (instead of a couple of days!) and I think it's going to look pretty good.
