Picked up the contact lenses today, forgot to get the stuff to rinse them off with. ho hum.

Since I was in Berkeley, I also attempted to return the pre-leaked nail polish to the Halloween store, but no joy. They do indeed have a large sign that says "all sales final" and that apparently includes defective merchandise. For a 5$ package of makeup, I wasn't willing to argue.

Then rambled across Berkeley and down Telegraph, heading for Cody's. On the way, wandered into a used clothing store. My thinking is that I want to get something which will look some kind of vintage, obviously not ordinary and therefore understood to be a costume, and yet something that I might wear for some other occasion than Halloween. This particular store proves to have many fabulous frocks which would have been eminently suitable but alas, none fit, not even the maroon silk prom dress which claimed to be a size 17/18 -- I couldn't even zip it up! And this is not even going into the things that were so obviously impossible that I didn't even attempt to try them on, like the swell 60's-era little dress with the pattern of black spirals on light grey... *sigh*

I accomplished my mission(s) at Cody's, which were: a new map of London since the one I pulled out this AM is literally in shreds; a map of Florence; a guide book on Florence. Then fled before buying any more books.

Now, usually, the stretch of Telegraph between the campus and Cody's is about the limit of my range. But I was still vaguely hoping for Halloween-related inspiration, so I walked another couple of blocks, and hit paydirt in the form of The Berkeley Hat Company.

After trying on dozens, I narrowed my choice down to three: a solid black one in a really lovely textured fabric, although I found the rosette plus gauze plus little long-stemmed bouncy feathers just slightly too much; a gorgeously shaped one with peacock feathers actually glued along the brim, rather than dangling; or black with a black & white sort-of leopard-print fabric band and a flower, made of the same fabric plus sequins, oddly resembling the irises on which I based my second tattoo. Ruling out the first was easy, letting go of the peacock feathered one was hard, but I settled on the third as being most suitable for the costume, obviously destined for me because of the flower, and furthermore the cheapest!

Having purchased the hat, my costume is now getting narrowed down a bit -- I am obviously not going to be a waitress, nor Pippi Longstocking.

With vague thoughts of hitting a thrift shop or two on the morrow, I head back toward BART -- but it occurs to me to check if Ross is still open, and since it is I stop in to see if they have anything suitable. And walked out some time later with a black dress decorated with sparkly beads, and a black velvet jacket with a faux fur collar.

It happens that I already have a pair of black and white dress shoes, so I think the costume is pretty much there. And furthermore, I think I am going to look Fabulous!

Now, only a few accessories needed. Anyone know a good place to get white gloves in size large?

And the tough decision: should my nails and lips be painted black or red?

White gloves? What length? If long, there should be some at New York Apparel on Haight.

I only got your v-mail message just now, btw. Cell phones are irritating.

Thanks for the tip. I will see if I can get myself moving early enough tomorrow to have time for a trip to Haight St (although in fact, I am probably looking for gloves just to the wrist, no doubt somewhere on Haight St is the right venue even if it is not New York Apparel).

And too bad the voice message went astray (how does this happen I wonder? because the same thing has happened to me. It would be less bewildering if the message was just never delivered than that it mysteriously is delayed for several hours... I mean, I get why that happens with email, annoying as it can be, but why with cell phone message systems? they should be deterministic!)

Never mind, we will talk soon -- in fact, give me a call tomorrow if you feel like it, although I gather you are going to be busy in some fun kind of way so I won't count on it.

It occurs to me that I am writing this long response without know whether you are likely to come back here and read it. I mean, I have the LJ email notification turned on, but that's because I'm a newbie who only has 3 friends :)

Never mind, it's written, I'm just going to post it and then go start changing the time on all my clocks...
