sunday AM grumbles
Mar. 20th, 2005 09:02 amWoke up this AM feeling very frail. Knees aching, general muscular tiredness, nothing severe, just what you'd expect after a fairly strenuous hike yesterday -- but it does make me wonder if I'm crazy to think I'll be fit to go trekking in September.
And my computer is fuxored. Well, not really, although I did have an interval of panic.
Short version: W2K SP4 is not compatible with Norton firewall versions previous to 2.0.1 build 27. And I, lucky person, happen to have 2.0.1 build 21. The impact this has is that complex web pages (e.g. JSP, ASP, heavy Javascript, AKA half the friggin internet including various things that I use routinely) fail to load.
That's really obvious, isn't it?
At least I figured this out (and confirmed it by turning off the firewall software for now). I was really scared for a while there. Probably it means I will need to buy a newer version of the firewall, since it doesn't look like Semantec is going to helpfully provide a download to the functional version (since they don't formally support versions earlier than 4, *sigh*).
And why, you may ask, was I so foolish as to download a Microsoft service pack? Well, I'm trying to get my new ipod shuffle to work. And that is another tale of woe...
