As you may recall, I joined a book club at my apartment building. This generally involves lively conversation and snacks and more wine than I would usually have on a school night.

All of which has been fun, but sadly the membership has been declining. Up until this meeting, we've had a quorum of 3 or 4, but one of those people has just moved to Portland and another couldn't make it tonight. So me and Terry, the librarian who just moved from downstairs to down the hall, met and shared a bottle of wine and ate cheese and crackers and fresh pineapple (it was my turn to provide food), and had a long rambling conversation that stuck to the book (The Good Earth) for about 15 minutes and then meandered all over the globe.

All of which was fine and good and no problem. The bad part is that I'm home and moderately sloshed and seriously tempted to drink some more wine and get really sloshed. Just because it's been that kind of week (already!) and I'm in that kind of mood. And, you know, I'm working at home tomorrow, so I get to sleep in until 7 or even 7:30 if I want to, woo hoo.

But I suppose instead I will go drink a glass (or two) of water and fall into bed. Am I wise, or am I foolish?

(Perhaps both.)

Hey! So I've been thinking of starting a book club here at Brickside. I got the idea from Julia... but I honestly have no idea how these things work.

How often do you meet? Do you have a set of questions you discuss or just randomly discuss? How long is each meeting?

Hey,

I just joined the book club here 3 or 4 months ago. We meet once a month, at 7 in the evening (no fixed end time, it just ends whenever we wind down). There is a standard schedule of first Tuesday of the month, but it often gets adjusted (to a different Tuesday) based on people's schedules for the upcoming month.

We take turns bringing snacks and wine. The discussion is thoroughly random, and often floats away from the book altogether. Toward the end of the meeting, we talk about what book we want to read next.

Right now we've just lost a couple folks, so we don't quite have critical mass. When I started, there were 4 regulars and I made 5. I think 4 is the minimum to make it work, since that way even if a person can't make the meeting, you still have more than 2 to keep the conversation going.

Hmm, that seems like all the fun facts I can think of at the moment.

Good luck with it! It is a fun thing to do, definitely.
