I think I am becoming one of those mildy deranged curmudgeons who cares more about animals than people. I mean, all the stories about people in the Gulf states are heartrending, but the stories about abandoned animals really tear me up. Something about their inability to understand what has happened? (my therapist will undoubtedly draw parallels with my experience as a helpless, bewildered, and emotionally "abandoned" child. I wonder if finding your therapist predictable is an important part of the therapeutic experience?)

In unrelated news, I have been voraciously hungry for the past two weeks or so. Apparently this last notch up in my training regimen has done something to my metabolism -- and I have, as a result, been eating like a proverbial horse. Thus far, this has not resulted in weight gain, but then it doesn't always show up overnight.

Ash is excessively cuddly today. Usually when I'm working at home, she jumps into my lap at some point, satisfies herself that I adore her properly, and then goes back to the sofa. Today she was nudging me every hour or so.

I really should spend some (more) time thinking about earthquake preparedness.

I had a dream last night (or was it the night before?) in which I realized that a large chunk had broken off of the sole of my hiking boot, and somehow I hadn't noticed in time to buy new ones.

Back at the Katrina ranch: I was outraged (at Bush) and impressed (by Pelosi) when I read this:
She related that she had urged Bush at the White House on Tuesday to fire Michael Brown. "He said 'Why would I do that?'" Pelosi said. "'I said because of all that went wrong, of all that didn't go right last week.' And he said 'What didn't go right?'"
"Oblivious, in denial, dangerous," she added.
