obligatory post-tday post
Nov. 25th, 2005 02:06 pmSpent the day yesterday with Linda and Nancy. Per Linda's request, we had the main meal at the time traditional in her family, around 1:00 in the afternoon, cleaned up, went for a little walk, and then regrouped for a second meal in the early evening.
Meal 1, AKA the major meal:
In lieu of actual poultry, some kind of soy fake-chicken patty called Quorn. Nondescript, but it makes a base for the cranberry relish.
Stuffing!
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes (with maple syrup and apples)
Roasted root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, and turnips roasted in olive oil and then glazed in Madeira)
Dried corn casserole custardy thing (apparently another tradition in Linda's family, odd but good)
Green salad with creamy mild curry dressing
Cranberry jelly AND cranberry horseradish relish
Fried sage leaves.
Meal 2, AKA the minor meal, AKA extended dessert:
4 cheeses: brie, manchego, and two different goat cheeses (both from my favorite goat-dairy-cheesery), Midnight Moon goat gouda and Purple Haze soft goat cheese
Crackers to accompany the above as needed.
Lemon cake with lemon-orange frosting
Cherry jello with whipped cream
Godiva chocolate-covered pretzels, and various other chocolates.
Fresh fruit: pineapple, mango, and strawberries.
(There was theoretically also ice cream, but none of us got there.)
Between the two meals, we drove down to the Berkeley marina for our digestive stroll. During the latter meal / grazing session, we watched an old video of an episode of Brother Cadfael. All very pleasant, and exceedingly peaceful.
p.s. my contributions, for the record, were the roasted root vegetables (which has become one of my specialties, but Kris gets credit for initially discovering the recipe), the fruit (of course), and the two hard cheeses (surprise? no). The rest was basically all Linda's doing, with moral and logistical support from Nan.
