The classic example of when google doesn't work is when you don't know the name of what you're looking for.
For instance, after spending several weeks occasionally poking, I finally spent a solid couple of hours over the weekend beating my head against the computer screen, in order to find out that: The nifty little feature where your web site can have a custom icon show up in the URL field, and in the tabs in modern versions of Netscape/Mozilla, is called the "shortcut icon". Once you know it's called that, it is very easy to find the code snippet to define it. In fact, finding an example code snippet is about the only way to figure out what it's called, if you don't already know. Especially if you are a Netscape/Mozilla user, and the name is derived from the way it is used in IE, so all of the search terms you can think of are slightly off kilter.
Having done that over the weekend, I just now spent a couple hours of quality time randomly poking at Photoshop Elements (picture the 1000 monkeys at their typewriters waiting for King Lear to emerge). With the result that I made a little image that almost looks OK if you squint, and got it to show up on the index page of my web page.
Which means I should really go through all the other pages... argh, need content management system, how can this be?
But it's hardly worth the effort until I can get it to work in IE -- which despite the fact that all of the examples I found were completely IE-centric (as in, e.g., off of MSDN) I have not yet managed to do.
Too much computer time. Stop now. Beat head more another day.
