frazzle dazzle
Apr. 21st, 2006 12:17 pmOne thing I meant to mention and forgot earlier: My favorite local radio station here now plays Dresden Dolls. Also, BTW, Neko Case (
ultraswank, take note).
Ran a smidge late getting out of here this AM because I tried to attach the PC cable lock that I bought yesterday, and couldn't get it to work. Grrrrr.
Then proceeded to get about 2/3 of the way to my niece's apartment and got lost for an hour. I am sure I was within 15 minutes of the place the whole time, I just kept missing turns and then not being sure if I'd gone too far or not.
Of course, when I finally got there, she had just woken up, so it didn't matter. Except that I was hungry and frazzled and grumpy.
For context: the Greater Pittsburgh Metropolitan area is roughly divided into the East End, the South Side / South Hills, and the North Side / North Hills (there is an area called West End but it's small, it's more like a pie cut into three wedges, roughly delimited by the rivers). I grew up in the East End, and have worked in the eastern suburbs, so I know my way around really well there. I'm less knowledgable about the North Hills, but I have worked out that way, so as long as I'm on major roads I'm pretty good. The South Hills OTOH are still like an unknown wilderness. My sister has lived there for quite some years, so I've learned to get to her place from various areas, but that did not help me today.
Anyway, once we finally connected, I had a fairly nice visit with Joanna. We talked about the fact that she does plan to go back to school at some point, and she was very impressed that I didn't care that she smokes pot.
It ended on an odd note, however. I had been talking about how I liked the Bay Area because the political atmosphere is more congenial to my tastes. Then she asked something like "is it true that it's weird to be straight in CA?" and somehow I heard it as straight / normal / conventional instead of hearing it as straight / heterosexual. I caught up in a minute or so, but by then I was flustered and felt stupid, and missed my chance to actually say something about myself, which was probably what she was really asking.
*sigh*
Anyway, now I'm briefly back in the hotel room, wondering if there is enough time to exercise before running back out to meet my sister. Otherwise, this will be the third day in a row of too much food and no exercise... Really must set alarm tomorrow...
