funny how that works
Apr. 24th, 2006 11:12 amIt never occurred to me to worry about hooking up with people I know here, I just assumed they'd be everywhere. On one level, that's been true: I chatted with Marti in the lady's room, caught a glimpse of Nancy Van House, said hello to Ping and to Jeff Johnson and to the fabulous Elizabeth... but have so far been eating meals alone and have not actually sat next to anyone I know during a session.
I am wondering if all the design professionals that I know have sworn off CHI, leaving only the academics. Hmm.
Other than that, it has all been interesting and charming. The keynote speech made me want to go work for Intuit. Of course, I am a happy conference person. In other areas of my life I may be curmudgeonly and pessimistic and overly particular, but I am always delighted with conferences. Really, what's not to like? Smart people, interesting information (sometimes useful, sometimes wacky), frequent intervals of free food and drink...
My agenda today is mostly the Jared Spool show. This year they are doing tutorials (basically free) during the main conference, and I signed up for a full day (three sessions) on scent -- and am trying to concentrate on figuring out how much of this applies to web applications, since that seems to be what it's my destiny to work on...
p.s. As I was writing this, Jeremy A from Oracle stopped to say hi. I was rather startled that he remembered me: he took over UE at Oracle the week before I quit, and therefore had the sad duty of trying to convince me not to leave when he hadn't ever met me before... Anyway, he seemed like a nice person then, and still does now.
