My big fear was that the vet would say "the antibiotics aren't helping, there must be something else wrong" and send us off to the veterinary neurologist. (Or, you know, worse than that, but let's not dwell on it.)

But, in fact, even though Lena is still extremely unsteady on her feet, her ears have cleared up enough that the vet could see her eardrums (intact) as well as confirming that the swelling has reduced. She also said it was not at all unusual that it is taking a while for the vertigo to subside. The vet that saw her on Tuesday had said that she didn't recommend ear drops because she couldn't see whether the eardrums had burst; now we are on a regimen of eardrops twice a day, as well as the oral antibiotic. Whee.

And I am to continue slavishly bringing her water and treats, to tempt her to eat without making her move. The worst part of this is the reaction from Ash-kitty, who takes great offense at special attention being paid to that other cat. (But, she is in fact winning too, since she gets extra treats every time her sister does. I just haven't started holding the water bowl for her to drink from, the way I have been with Lena...)

So, all in all, things are looking up. Many thanks to all of you who have expressed sympathy and concern.
