I did have a brief shining moment of optimism yesterday. Really I did. Today: more back pain, and Lena isn't eating.

Re: back pain: yesterday it was down to an achey knot on the left side and very tight gluteous muscles. I had another visit to the chiropractor in the morning, and felt fairly close to normal in the afternoon, and even went for a little walk in the evening. I really hoped that by today, it would be a memory. But instead, it is just a little worse -- not back to sharp pain, but the entire lower half of my back is aching. Which makes me scared to try to do anything -- even the 1/2 hour walk I took yesterday may have been too much -- so a hike or a vigorous flow yoga class seem right out.

It seems cruel and unfair that I have a Sunday with essentially no obligations, and can't DO anything. At least, I can't do anything requiring physical exertion, which is what I'm craving.

Meanwhile, Lena just doesn't seem at all well today.

She was at the vet yesterday for bloodwork. It came back today with significant improvement in her kidney values -- nowhere near normal, nor even near the just-slightly-abnormal levels from 6 months ago, but substantially down from last week. Which means the additional subQ is doing what we'd hoped. And, as of yesterday, her attitude and behavior were also looking better.

Today, without warning, she doesn't want to eat, and seems less comfortable... perhaps even unhappy.

I just now gave her a dose of the appetite stimulant (which she hadn't needed since early last week) and attempted to give her a dose of the pain medication, but I think I got most of it on my hand instead. Of course, I don't really know if either of those things will be helpful, but Dr A did say she trusts my judgement about when to give them, so I suppose I might as well try to trust me, too.

As one more complicating factor, Dr L mentioned that her white blood cell count is low. This could mean that she is not producing white blood cells correctly, or that she has an infection of some sort, so that the white blood cells are all clustered there instead of in her bloodstream. We could try to put her on an antibiotic, but without any clue what kind of infection it could be, that would be guesswork -- and one more medication to potentially make her queasy. Or, in theory, we could take an aspirate of her bone marrow, but that would of course require anesthesia which she is probably not strong enough to survive.

So it's back to wait and see.

And back to me longing for unambiguity: Please Lena, either be well enough that I'm sure you're enjoying life, or unwell enough that I'm sure you're not.
