On why urban life is not contrary to environmentalism:

" Urban density is a key to sustainability, since it's impossible to live in a densely populated urban environment any other way. I don't own a car in New York first and foremost because it's stupid to own a car here and I don't need one, not because I'm green. So, while the ecological footprint of a city like New York is quite large, it is collectively smaller than if the 8 million-plus people here were living the suburban and exurban dream that most Americans aspire to. "

From an interview with Andrew Light, a philosopher specializing in environmental ethics, in an online magazine called Grist -- note the tag line, "Gloom and doom with a sense of humor"!
