oddly satisfying day
Aug. 3rd, 2004 09:46 amAfter the annoying wait for the call from the recruiter, I spent a little more time waiting for her to email a sample design problem which I needed to "spend an hour or two on" as part of my application for the job.
After a bit, I decided it was obvious stupid to expect a prompt response from this person, so I went for a hike at Redwood. As usual, the endorphins and the young redwoods combined to cheer me up some. (Although realizing just before I got to the park that I was almost out of gas was a little disturbing. I did, however, manage to get to a gas station before the last of the fumes ran out.)
By the time I got home, the email from the recruiter had arrived, and although I had been thinking about going to a movie, I decided to just go ahead and work on the problem, rather than put it off.
And you know, it was actually fun. The company does voice systems, and I know nothing from nothing about voice UI design, but I read a couple short articles online (during all of the aforementioned waiting) and just started thinking about the logic and which parts might be complicated... and then spent a little more time trying to come up with a simple way to describe the branching, without having a suitable flowcharting tool at hand to illustrate it. The whole thing was very satisfying to that part of my brain that likes problem-solving.
In a totally different mood than I've been saying this: I really need to get back to work...
