As noted earlier, today kind of dragged at work -- but I soldiered away until 5:30, then walked up to the gym for my appt with the trainer. Who turned out to be very nice, and who put me through a workout that I am definitely going to feel tomorrow, and in fact am feeling in my knees right now.

That went a little later than expected, not only dashing my fond hope of catching the 7:29 train, but in fact I had to racewalk to catch the 7:49 train (undoubtedly another factor in my knee soreness at this moment). Then it turned out that at that hour there's no timed transfer, so I had to sit for 10 minutes at Balboa Park.

All of which would have been no big deal except that I didn't manage to have a snack anywhere in there -- I wasn't hungry at 5:30 and after that I just never stopped moving -- and I am definitely not used to dinner being after 9 -- and I really do not cope very well when my blood sugar gets low. So, for instance, I was pretty darned cranky sitting there at the BART station, glaring at the sign that kept scrolling public service announcements instead of telling me when my damn train was going to come!

Of course, I'm home now, and have fed myself, and am starting to feel human again. I just need to figure out how I am going to work things on the evenings when I go to the gym, and either have a snack before I go, or carry something that I can eat on BART, or eat fast food in San Bruno and get home really obnoxiously late... *sigh*

Ah well. It's OK, really, nothing I didn't sign up for. In a few weeks, I'll have a good routine established.

Exercising without eating is no good! The answer: Trail mix. A year ago I would never have touched the stuff (I was force-fed health food as a child and have never recovered) -- but then I saw that trader joes started carrying a lovely assortment of tasty human-kibble options. There's one with almonds, dried cherries, and pistachios that's very decent.

Trying to think of other things that are portable and filling but don't include a huge amount of sugar or salt... If you felt REALLY ambitious, you could bake yourself something to last the week: corn muffins or cheesy scones or something sturdy like that.

Now this still doesn't help with getting home at 9 and having to make a meal. That would take lots of planning ahead and freezing I would think. But good for you for hitting the gym after work! It's all I can do to get home, get fed, and flop myself down with my knitting. I think the cardiovascular benefits of knitting are yet unexplored -- but nothing to going to a gym with a trainer.

Hmm, I had been thinking about those protein-energy bar kinds of things (easy to eat while walking, reasonably discrete to eat on BART), but perhaps a measured dose of kibble trail mix would also do the trick...

On the making a meal front: I have to admit, I don't really do much of that even when I get home at a reasonable hour. I subsist mainly on hommos and canned soup and stuff that can be warmed up in the microwave. TJ's is a big help in supporting this lifestyle, e.g. what I ended up eating last night was a 3-minute microwavable green chicken curry, actually very good.

Are you kidding? She'd drop into a sugar coma on the BART and would never be seen again.
