jaeclecticWell, after returning the wireless router and getting a different one (I would have just exchanged it for the same kind, but they were out of stock) I went through the setup and found the same thing: no wireless network showed up.
But this time, I had my work laptop at home, and thought: hey, I should check on the other machine. And lo, the network is there, and I can connect to it.
So it's my PC that's hosed, not the router. *slaps forehead*
I would feel more stupid if the tech support person hadn't been the one to conclude it was a problem with the router.
So, I'm writing this from my work laptop while waiting for my personal laptop to reboot, after downloading new driver files for the wireless card. If that doesn't work, I am not sure what to try next... Bah bah bah.
p.s. Also set up new mini-stereo, and the radio keeps fading out. Not sure if it's the station or just the way this space is.
p.p.s. Saw 5, count 'em5, racoons racing along the fence outside a little while ago. I had been warned by my neighbor that it is a racoon freeway, but I was hoping that meant "in the middle of the night when there is no chance of me being outside". And when I say race, I mean race: they were running full tilt, almost falling off in their haste. Amusing, yet mildly scary (my general reaction to racoons is "cute but only at a distance thank you very much").
