more packing, more tired
Mar. 21st, 2004 10:05 pmI got a lot done today, but still seems like there's a huge amount to go. And no more weekend left, eeep.
Determined I really couldn't afford the time to go to the gym today, and besides my knees are already over-stressed. So I packed, finished going through desk stuff, packed some more, doing twelve things at once and probably none of them efficiently. Per plan, took one Mini-load over.
And remembered to back up the computer. Which involved downloading a new program since I've given up on the crap that came with the zip drive. So if by pure bad luck something does go wrong in transit, I have trusted my files to a new and untested shareware program. C'est la guerre.
And of course didn't have enough zip drives for everything that I wanted to back up, so had to run to Office Depot for more. Fortunately, this is right next to Safeway where I bought milk. And also thought to buy gas along the way, which could save some stress later in the week.
Also got cash. Because my new checks haven't come, and I have exactly two left, so I figured maybe I shouldn't pay Linda with one of them...
I am starting to note down what needs to be done on a day-by-day basis, e.g.,
Thursday (last day before move), disassemble stereo & computer, unfasten furniture from walls;
Wednesday, pack rest of kitchen,
Tuesday, lost day because I have theatre tickets and dammit I'm going,
Monday, which is tomorrow, everything else?!?
eeeeep.

Computer Backup
Date: 2004-03-22 06:26 am (UTC)Sounds like you've already taken care of it for this move but for future reference, after my Iomega 750 Internal Zip drive hung up within a year of my getting the new computer, and I permanently killed it while trying to dislodge the stuck zip disk, I decided I really needed to look at a more efficient method of backup. Though I'm generally hardware ignorant I stumbled upon a solution that is working very, very well. I bought a Maxtor external hard drive. You just connect it to the CPU via cable and hit the one-touch backup button on the front of the hard drive (the program it uses is Retrospect Express). Within minutes the entire hard drive -- programs, operating system, music, etal are backed up onto the external drive. It has been a godsend during tax season where I can easily backup every night without worry. I haven't had to use the backup copies yet but I do regularly test it to be sure they are readable and so far no glitches whatsoever. No more buying extra zip drives, no more taking hours to back things up, no more keeping track of what has been backed up and what hasn't. And, the cost was under $200. It's less portable than a zip disk but apparently you can unplug it and plug it into a new computer or laptop as well although I haven't tried that feature yet.
Good luck with the move.
